Chief Willard Leroy Ackley

The Sokaogon Chippewa Community is commonly known as the Lost Tribe due to an interesting event that took place during the Treaty of 1854. At that time, the Tribe's legal title to the reservation was lost in a shipwreck on Lake Superior. The Tribe struggled for many years to gain ownership of the land that was promised to them. Finally, in 1937, the Lost Tribe received its federal recognition and reservation status under the leadership of Chief Willard Ackley. The Last recognized Chief for the Mole Lake Sokaogon Chippewa Community.
